Basketball proving to be wheelie good

After about 20 years wheelchair basketball has made a return to east Dorset. In the 1990’s there were 3 teams based in the Poole area, sadly they all dissolved. Although there have been a couple of attempts to resurrect the sport in the area there has not been a sustainable attempt until now.
The Dorset Demons Wheelchair Basketball Club have obtained funding from both Sport England and Active Dorset to provide 8 wheelchair basketball taster sessions for both physically disabled and non-disabled adults on Thursday evenings at Rossmore Leisure Centre in Poole. They have already held 5 of these sessions and they have proved to be very successful with 13 disabled and 3 non-disabled attendees.
The Dorset Demons Chairman Terry Dennis said “We have been very impressed with the amount of people who have grasped this opportunity to try this fast paced and challenging sport, but we still have 3 sessions remaining and would definitely like to give this experience to more people, especially more physically disabled people who may not of had the chance to play a team sport”.
“We have use of 16 basketball wheelchairs, so all you need to do to have a go is turn up wearing suitable exercise clothes and bring a bottle of water to keep yourself hydrated” he continued.
When asked what the future holds? Terry said “We have plans in place to continue the sessions when the taster sessions end on 4 November. Although this will be at a small charge to cover expenses such as court hire etc, and then the eventual goal is to enter a team into the sports National League.”
“That’s why the sessions are available to both disabled and non-disabled adults. Due to the sports classification system both can compete in the league. Those with an impairment would be classified between 1 and 4.5 points, where in contrast a non-disabled person would be classified at 5 points. A team being able to have a maximum of 15 points across it’s 5 players on court at any one time” he added.
If you think wheelchair basketball might be your ball game the remaining 3 taster sessions are 7.00-9.00pm on 21 and 28 October and 4 November at Rossmore Leisure Centre in Herbert Avenue, Poole. For more information or to attend one of these sessions email dorsetdemons@gmail.com.
